Ko Lipe Economy

The economy of Ko Lipe is based mostly on tourism. Tourism provides most of the income for the locals with fishing providing a secondary source of income. The island has seen exponential growth during the last few years with the number of tourists increasing each seen and new hotels and restaurants going up. During the monsoon season, the nearby army base helps the locals with food and supplies.

Ko Lipe has become a very popular destination for tourists coming to Thailand in recent years and the island has seen a lot of development over the last year. There are now many resorts and upscale restaurants. Before Ko Lipe saw mostly backpackers but it is now seeing a lot of package tourists and locals from the mainland.

There has been a lot of investment from Thai businesses and Ko Lipe’s economy continues to grow, at the expense though of the local environment.
