Reunion Economy
The economy of Reunion has traditionally been based on agriculture. Sugarcane has been the primary crop for more than a century, accounting for 85% of exports. The government has been pushing the development of the tourist industry to help relieve the island’s high unemployment, which is around 40%.
In 2006, the GDP per capita of Reunion at real exchange rates was 16,244 Euros (US$20,406), making it one of the richest places in Africa. The total GDP of the island was US$15.98 billion in 2006.
